Senior Services Pet Food Drive Oct 12-16

Senior ServicesSenior Services of Southwest Michigan is holding a pet food drive October 12-16.  Your generosity helps seniors care for their furry friends during tough times.  In many cases, pets are the only friend, family or companion local seniors have, and with limited incomes it’s hard for elderly pet owners to provide food for themselves and their pets.

The Kalamazoo Humane Society does offer a pet food bank which is open to anyone, however this program is different in that they cater to seniors, and the pet food can be delivered with Meals on Wheels for those who are receiving that service.

The next time you stop at the store, please consider buying an extra bag or two of pet food to help local seniors in need or you can also make a donation via PayPal here!

Food can be dropped off at:

Animal Care & Resource Center Update

Dear friends of the Kalamazoo Humane Society,

I’m writing to provide an update on our proposed Animal Care & Resource Center.

As you know, since 2013 KHS and Kalamazoo County have operated under a Memorandum of Understanding to create and locate animal welfare services in a single facility. As the process has evolved, so have the perspectives of both the County and the Humane Society. During the two-year process, we both came to realize that the flexibility of separate facilities outweighed the advantages of a shared one. After much discussion, we agreed the best path forward is to pursue separate facilities based on our individual roles, needs and opportunities.

While we won’t be together under one roof, we’re still solid partners in the collaborative work benefiting the community and its animals. The County and the Humane Society have enjoyed a long, productive partnership for many years. We both remain committed to that work.

Meanwhile, the Humane Society is in the final stages of securing land in Comstock Township for our new home. Once we’ve closed on the property, we’ll begin designing the facility and a capital campaign to fund it. Our goal is to be in the new facility in 2017.

On behalf of everyone at the Kalamazoo Humane Society—and most importantly, the animals of greater Kalamazoo—I have appreciated your support for our crucial work that includes reducing unwanted litters; providing pet food for about 500 animals each day; and offering a safe haven for pets of domestic assault victims. With your help, we’ve spayed/neutered over 55,000 animals since 2002, during which time we’ve seen a dramatic reduction in the number of unwanted animals in our community. This opportunity to create a Center that will meet ever-increasing animal welfare needs comes at a wonderful time in our organization’s 118-year history, and we appreciate your continued support as we move forward.

Best Regards,
Aaron Winters

You can help end cosmetics testing on animals!

End Cosmetic Testing HSUSAnimals in the U.S. are still enduring painful and often deadly experiments to test cosmetics like lipstick, deodorant and cologne. The Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2858), sponsored by U.S. Reps. Martha McSally (R-AZ), Don Beyer (D-VA), Joe Heck (R-NV) and Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), will make this a thing of the past by prohibiting animal testing for all cosmetic products manufactured or sold in the U.S.

Alternatives to animal testing already exist: Humane and safe cosmetics can be made using thousands of existing ingredients, and several non-animal safety tests are already available for new ingredients. These non-animal alternatives are often cheaper, faster, and more relevant to humans, and therefore more reliable predictors of safety.

Help end testing cosmetics on animals in the U.S. — just like in more than 30 countries where this outdated practice has been phased out, including Norway, Israel, India and every country in the European Union.

Take Action

Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative to urge support for H.R. 2858, the Humane Cosmetics Act. Look up your legislator’s phone number. You can say, “I’m a constituent and I urge you to co-sponsor the Humane Cosmetics Act, if you haven’t already done so. This bill would prohibit animal testing for cosmetics manufactured or sold in the U.S.”

After making your phone call (please do not skip that crucial step!), fill in and submit the form here to automatically send a follow-up message. We encourage you to add your own thoughts or comments in the editable portion so your representative knows how important this issue is to you.
